LEONCAVALLO, R.: Pagliacci [Opera] (Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, 2019) (Blu-ray, HD) DYN-57863

Matteo Mezzaro’s Beppe provides some of the strongest singing in the performance.

Valerio Galli’s conducting is of a piece with everything else. It is idiomatic, decently paced, warmly phrased… © 2020 Fanfare Read complete review

LEONCAVALLO, R.: Pagliacci [Opera] (Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, 2019) (Blu-ray, HD) DYN-57863

This is by no means the best Pagliacci to be seen or heard. One must travel back to 1934 for that, this time live from the Metropolitan, with Giovanni Martinelli, Lawrence Tibbett, and Queena Mario, in acceptable sound from a recent Immortal Performances disc. However, this is good, solid, Italianate, passionate singing, notably from the tenor and soprano. The picture is sharp, with subtitles easily found. The sound is crystal clear, bringing out the best of the timpani and brass to good effect. The voices are well to the fore. There is a short extra with the directors discussing the production. For those who like their verismo full-blooded and idiomatically led, this is for you. Highly recommended. © 2020 Fanfare Read complete review

LEONCAVALLO, R.: Pagliacci [Opera] (Sepe, Villari, Cecconi, Fiorentino Maggio Musicale Chorus and Orchestra, Galli) CDS7863

I appreciated the pristine beauty of Valerio Galli’s conducting of Cavalleria. There are…bright spots, such as the subito piano effect at the start of Silvio’s 'E allor perche tu m’hai stregato?’, sung with lovely tenderness by baritone Leon Kim.

Baritone Devid Cecconi, the Alfio in Cavalleria, is likewise handicapped: the high notes are stunning… © 2020 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

Best is Valeria Sepe’s Nedda, her voice having thrust and a strong stage presence… Valerio Galli conducts this and the Offenbach very well. © 2020 Opera Now
