I. Pour-El, Des Moines Area Community Coll., Boone, IA
Library Journal, April 2011

Haggard’s enormously popular and groundbreaking 1887 novel combines the search for a lost civilization and a fountain of youth with dangerous adventures in unknown parts, classic implicit colonial imperialism, and just a touch of sympathy for non-Western cultures. It is the direct ancestor of modern adventure tales from Tarzan to Indiana Jones; more than a century later, it remains a gripping tale, far less dated than many of its formulaic followers. In this definitive audio edition, narrator Bill Homewood (King Solomon’s Mines) does an outstanding job of gently drawing listeners into the story until only the story exists. Highly recommended for all appreciators of adventure tales.

Haggard’s years with the Governor of Natal in the 1970s inspired the kernel of this very Victorian fantasy. Cambridge don Holly and his adopted son Vincey are searching for the legendary Queen Ayesha, known as ‘She’ by the primitive tribe which the adventurers discover in Africa. This is no boys’ adventure like King Solomon’s Mines—a seductive element of eroticism is woven into the fantastic tale of mysterious clues, reincarnation, cannibalism, suspense and women’s thraldom over men.

She – A History of Adventure is a sensual classic of 19th-century literature, now available in a complete and unabridged audiobook format, narrated by popular television actor Bill Homewood. Cambridge academic Ludwig Horace Holly and his adopted son Leo embark on an adventure in search of the legendary queen, She-who-must-be-obeyed, who rules a small, primitive tribe amidst the ruins of a bygone Egyptian civilization. Holly and Leo swiftly encounter depredation and danger, as a shipwreck derails their journey and they are captured by cannibals. An exciting saga of wonder, danger, suspense, and also light erotic passion, She A History of Adventure is an enthralling rendition of a timeless work of literature, highly recommended.
