The Times (London), September 2017

Some children’s classics can strike the ear as dated; Barbara Euphan Todd’s Worzel Gummidge bounces with unrepentant zest from the moment John and Susan sight a scarecrow in the ten-acre field of Scatterbrook Farm and take his battered umbrella to shelter from the rain. Did his arms quiver? Did the features carved into his mangel-wurzel head change expression? Todd’s simple phrasing, embellished with interesting words such as “dawdlesome” and “rampageous”, is perfectly pitched for small children; parents will chuckle along with Gummidge’s adventures too. Jessica Martin reads with the crisp clarity vital in a children’s audiobook. © 2017 The Times (London)
