Alide Kohlhaas
The Seniors Review, October 2013

W.M. Thackeray’s Vanity Fair is a lengthy tale of almost 900 pages. Naxos has released an abridged version under its Classic Fiction label that suffers no pain from having been shortened. All the important bits are there, which make the point of his story very clear. The two female characters who dominate the story are Becky Sharp, the fascinating poor girl determined to make good and so the book’s anti-heroine, and Amelia Sedley, the ‘dear little creature’ of good family, who must go through trials and tribulations to finally triumph. With chapters interspersed by excerpts from various composers of the period, this tale is read with beautiful nuances by British actress Jane Lapotaire. © 2013 The Seniors Review
