ROSSINI, G.: Overtures (Complete), Vol. 2 (Prague Sinfonia, Benda) (Blu-Ray Audio) NBD0035

Crisply played with good solo efforts throughout, and very nicely recorded…consistently entertaining. © 2014 PS Audio Read complete review

Audiophile Audition, March 2014

No choruses this time around, just 15 sparkling performances again of the wonderful Rossini music.

The 5.0 96K/24bit surround audio is excellent, as are the performances. © 2014 Audiophile Audition Read complete review

I hope this Blu-ray disc signals things to come from Naxos, as it offers the contents of two CD’s, and together with a previous disc we have all of Rossini’s overtures. Not only do you have a long playing time, but if you have top-end of the market equipment you move to a totally new listening experience. With the luxury of being able to compare the two formats I repeat my oft used statement that the CD sounds like a recording, while the Blu-ray takes you into the concert hall. In its surround-style format it gives a transparency that has previously been unavailable. So far as the performance and contents are concerned…it contains a nice mix of his famous concert overtures and some from his lesser known operas. The playing is smooth and refined, Benda recreating the dynamics the composer requested, while avoiding the excesses that have become all too familiar. A ‘top of the charts’ recommendation. © 2014 David’s Review Corner
