HANDEL, G.F.: Deidamia (DNO, 2012) (Blu-ray, HD) OABD7110D

David Alden’s splendid production of Deidamia is a joy. His witty update of Handel’s last opera captures its bitter-sweet blend of irony and heartbreak, and features a stellar performance from Sally Matthews, whose portrayal of Deidamia, as she passes from innocence to the disillusion and fury of ‘M’hai resa infelice’, is intensely moving.

There’s strong support too from Veronica Cangemi’s Nerea and Olga Pasichnyk, whose gauche, laddish Achilles in a frilly pink frock is a comic delight… © 2020 Early Music Today Read complete review

Paul Corfield Godfrey
MusicWeb International, March 2013

The first thing to be said about this recording is that the performance is magnificent. Sally Bradshaw encompasses all the aspects of Deidamia with ease and confidence, and produces some superbly poised coloratura in her ornamentation of the da capo arias. Ulysses…is here taken…by the very feminine Silvia Tro Santafé who produces some gloriously smooth sounds…Veronica Cangemi and the personable Andrew Foster-Williams both produce performances to die for; and even the elderly Lycomedes is given full measure by Umberto Chiummo. In the pit the energetic Ivor Bolton keeps everything moving along nicely…Indeed from the musical point of view this is quite simply faultless…

…the scenery, by Paul Steinberg, is superb. The panoramic skyscapes which dominate the scene are beautifully designed, and the sets…have an attractiveness which enhances the stage picture. © 2013 MusicWeb International Read complete review

Definitely the Opera, February 2013

Silvia Tro Santafe plays [Ulysses] really well through his numerous attempts at seduction and the warmongering speeches about glory and fate. Sally Matthews as the princess in love with Achilles has all the prettiest arias, but also probably the toughest scene of all, the one in which she sings and dances wearing but a swimsuit. She pulls it all off beautifully. Soprano Olga Pasichnykis a revelation as Achille: she makes the fast, light coloratura and jock masculinity two coins of the same gender. Oh yeah, did I mention the comedic talent too? Somebody to watch out for.

Ivor Bolton conducts the ever capable and energetic Concerto Köln. This is a production bursting with energy and good ideas. © 2013 Definitely the Opera Read complete review

HANDEL, G.F.: Deidamia (DNO, 2012) (Blu-ray, HD) OABD7110D

Sally Matthews is perfect as Deidamia: saucy in ‘Nasconde l’usignol’, heartfelt in ‘M’hai resa infelice’, with its echo of the first concerto in Handel’s Op 3 set. Veronica Cangemi is delightful as her fellow princess. Ivor Bolton conducts with passion: splendid sforzandos in another intense aria, ‘Se il timore’. The audience certainly enjoyed it all. © 2013 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone
