Helen Wallace
BBC Music Magazine, August 2013

There’s nothing cutesy about director Melly Still’s treatment of animal characters, who form a parade of grotesques… while Vixen Sharp-Ears (Lucy Crowe) is a rebellius, DM-wearing adolescent, more runaway killer than seductress © 2013 BBC Music Magazine

Robert Benson, June 2013

It is a magnificent presentation of the opera, realistic in design and perfectly sung. Tom Tye’s design is effective…Dinah Collins’ costumes work well, and lighting recreates changing scenes effectively. A brief bonus features Jurowski talking about the music and the production, and the DVD booklet contains a helpful track by track synopsis of action. Video is brilliant, audio excellent…This is a quality presentation of an opera that meant much to the composer… © 2013 Read complete review

Stephen Smoliar, May 2013

The leading roles in this performance are sung by Lucy Crowe as the vixen…Sergei Leiferkus as the forester…and Emma Bell as the fox…

The instrumental side of the score is provided by the London Philharmonic Orchestra…conducted by Vladimir Jurowski…He conducts with a keen sense of how Janáček tends to direct the flow of his music through the modulation of energy levels.

…this is an opera that takes a fairy-tale-like narrative and serves it up as a visual and auditory feast; and this Glyndebourne production delivers exquisitely on both visual and auditory levels. © 2013 Read complete review

David Shengold
Opera News, October 2012

The 2012 production has definite virtues, not least a radiant, clearly detailed performance of the score by the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Vladimir Jurowski. The crucial interludes are superbly played…

Lucy Crowe makes a delightful, clear-voiced Vixen, full of mischief. Leiferkus…sings and acts with vigor and detail. Schelomianski sings strongly and with a wide range and has a very expressive face. William Dazeley, strong on top, renders solid work as the poacher Harasta…Jean Rigby (Forester’s Wife/Owl) and Adrian Thompson (Mosquito/Schoolmaster) give good accounts of themselves. © 2013 Opera News Read complete review
