Damn Yankees! – A new Butterfly is set in a seedy, postwar Nagasaki.

The provocative staging is thoughtful and mostly effective. Equally thoughtful, and always effective, is Omer Meir Wellber’s conducting, which firmly supports the singers without covering them, as happens in so many live Butterflys. “Un bel dì” makes an impact because Wellber, the London Philharmonic and Olga Busuioc, the Moldovan Cio-Cio-San, span a wide dynamic range with perfect coordination. Busuioc’s strong soprano, steely on high fortes, not tender or sensuous, makes her a Cio-Cio-San of tough but resilient character, not girlish or victimlike—for better or worse. © 2020 Opera News Read complete review

Conductor Omer Meir Wellber has a veteran’s skill with the score and gets exquisite playing from the London Philharmonic, which spends its summer as the pit orchestra at Glyndebourne. One has to admire the scrupulous musicality of the entire production…

All told, given the attractive lead singers immersed in a successfully theatrical setting, there is a great deal to enjoy here—nothing detracts from the opera’s sure-fire impact.

The video has excellent sound, camera work, and visuals. The sets are given Western touches, in keeping with the leading theme of the production, but the atmosphere of Japan is preserved. © 2020 Fanfare Read complete review

MusicWeb International, October 2019

The beginning of Act Three is impressive from a directorial perspective, opening with a projection of Butterfly’s dream on the stage… The ensuing ensemble is striking enough, and the rest of the opera holds the attention well. Wellber emphasises the eastern qualities in the score…

All in all, a pleasing cooperation between the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Glyndebourne Chorus, under the vigorous baton of Omer Meir Wellber. © 2019 MusicWeb International Read complete review

PUCCINI, G.: Madama Butterfly [Opera] (Glyndebourne, 2018) (Blu-ray, HD) OABD7166D

Moldovan soprano Olga Busuioc, a pupil of Mirella Freni, sings well, with ample tone, her interpretation having grown during the run at Glyndebourne. Joshua Guerrero comes across well vocally as Pinkerton… The finest singer here is Elizabeth DeShong as a sincere, affecting Suzuki, her plum tones ripe and round. Omer Meir Wellber conducts the London Philharmonic Orchestra in a similarly ripe performance, alert and dramatic to Puccini’s score, but never overwhelming his singers. © 2019 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone

This is a captivating and very moving account which avoids gimmicks and yet brings us a fresh and disturbing vision of the world American Imperialism.

Omer Meir Wellber’s conducting is whole-hearted, extrovert and totally engaging. I didn’t see this live in the house and now wish very much that I had done so! © 2019 Lark Reviews Read complete review

My Classical Notes, July 2019

…Sensuously and expertly played by the London Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Omer Meir Wellber’ with praise for Guerrero’s ‘Pinkerton, sung with soaring, wilful, preening grace’ and a ‘Sharpless, richly and sympathetically portrayed by Micael Sumuel’. © 2019 My Classical Notes Read complete review

Throughout the score is driven by Omer Meir Wellber with a fierce intensity and lack of sentimentality which is always engaging. The singing is splendid and I particularly liked Michael Sumuel’s world-weary Sharpless.

Very well worth investing in, even if you have more than one Butterfly already. © 2019 Lark Reviews Read complete review
