I gave this recording of a 2017 performance of this opera the imprimatur of Recommended because of the outstanding interpretation of Ermonela Jaho in the title role and the musical realisation by Covent Garden’s musical director along with an excellent cast and realistic, imaginative staging. © 2019 MusicWeb International

PUCCINI, G.: Madama Butterfly [Opera] (Royal Opera House, 2017) (Blu-ray, HD) OABD7244D

The show centres on a remarkable performance by Ermonela Jaho, whose strongly flavoured soprano is the foundation of a searching examination of the title role that is artful yet impassioned, and equally encompasses delicacy within its considerable variety of tone. © 2019 Opera

As the cad Pinkerton, Marcelo Puente—whose voice I have not heard before—looks suitably suave and physically impressive in his naval uniform, using his strong, burnished tenor to good effect, matched by subtleties in his acting demeanour.

Patrice Caurier and Moshe Leiser’s direction is clear and done with great care and attention to detail. Agostino Cavalca’s costumes are appropriate throughout… All contribute and blend to make as cohesive a performance of this work as can be conceived for today’s social values. The production is as good in its way as John Copley’s La Bohème—and one cannot give greater praise than that. © 2019 MusicWeb International Read complete review

PUCCINI, G.: Madama Butterfly [Opera] (Royal Opera House, 2017) (Blu-ray, HD) OABD7244D

Jaho’s vocal performance is touching. Hers is not a sumptuous soprano, glossing Puccini’s rich lyric lines, but the colours she brings to her portrayal are astonishing, scaling ‘Un bel dì’ down to the merest thread.

Pappano—arguably today’s greatest Puccinian conductor—draws ardent playing from the ROH Orchestra, superbly detailed in its commentaries. © 2018 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone

Opera Now, December 2018

Likewise with Pappano’s conducting of Madama Butterfly, which showcases the stunning Cio-Cio-San of Ermonela Jaho, who lives and dies her role without distorting her vocal prowess and gives an incredibly detailed physical and vocal performance. © 2018 Opera Now
