David Denton
David's Review Corner, November 2013

Britten’s Gloriana had lain dormant until 1993, when the UK provincial company Opera North mounted an acclaimed and televised production from Phyllida Lloyd…[the Royal Opera House] decided to invite Richard Jones to take a new look at the work…though we will remember Josephine Barstow’s incomparable portrait of the Queen, Susan Bullock makes a worthy successor. In Toby Spence we have a very real and young Earl of Essex that the Queen could have fallen for, while Clive Bayley revives is his fine portrait of Raleigh that we saw with Opera North. Thankfully Paul Daniel, who also conducted the Opera North production, draws some of the best playing from the Royal Opera House orchestra we have heard in recent times, and the remainder of the cast deserves the audience’s approbation. A quirky production that I could not recommend unseen…the filming is very good…the sound…offers a very realistic quality. © 2013 David’s Review Corner
