STRAUSS, R.: Ariadne auf Naxos (Glyndebourne, 2013) (NTSC) OA1135D
STRAUSS, R.: Ariadne auf Naxos (Glyndebourne, 2013) (Blu-ray, HD) OABD7145D

Vladimir Jurowski completed his twelve-year tenure as Glyndebourne’s music director with this production, and he coaxed a brilliant performance from the scaled-down London Philharmonic.

Thomas Allen, at sixty-eight, still beautifully sang every note of the Music Master’s role in a way few have ever done. Kate Lindsey’s Composer is vocally a delight; fresh, tender and unblemished of tone, she consistently finds a personal identification with the role. © 2014 Opera News Read complete review

Love it or hate it—and I loved it on seeing it live—Katharina Thoma’s Glyndebourne vision of Strauss and Hofmannsthal’s ‘pretty hybrid’, mixing mythology and comedy, has ideal energy and pace. That’s partly thanks to Vladimir Jurowski’s sense of direction in the pit, but you can tell that all the performers are commited to the same vision. © 2014 BBC Music Magazine

Kate Lindsey’s Composer is beautifully detailed…her voice has a soprano-like colour and ease. Thomas Allen’s Music-Master is excellent…and Dmitri Vargin’s Harlekin pleasingly lyrical. There are fine performances from the rest of the cast…

Vladimir Jurowski draws clean and elegantly virtuoso playing from the LPO…The technical quality of the film and sound is excellent… © 2014 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone

…this performance has some considerable strengths in Lindsey’s manic portrayal of the Composer, Claycomb’s spectacular delivery of Zerbinetta’s showstopper aria, and good contributions from the supporting cast of comedians and nymphs. Sir Thomas Allen…is most respectable Music Master and Skhokhodov’s Bacchus is bright and heroic. Conductor Jurowski has a great feel for Strauss’s score and extracts all of its glory from his London Philharmonic Orchestra players.

Video director Francois Roussillon produces a beautiful watch with great stage coverage and closeups. The colors and details are very natural as well. © 2014 Blu-rayDefinition.com Read complete review
