Manuelo Ribeiro
Pizzicato, November 2014

Musically excellent, this Pesaro production of Rossini’s ‘Litaliana in Algeri’ is staged in the manner of a funny spy movie. © 2014 Pizzicato

The often garish sets, costumes, and stage direction yield two and a half hours of sheer visual and vocal delight. All of the principals sing and act superbly…mezzo-soprano Goryachova literally steals the show with her campy delivery and svelte physique, her tenor partner Shi gives us very appealing solos…Stage director Davide Livermore’s updating has a comedic rightness that even Rossini would have enjoyed.

…the Rossini Festival provides an upbeat, visually and vocally appealing production that will definitely tickle your funny bone. A young cast, receiving great directorial support, makes this a must-watch for opera lovers. © 2014 Blu-rayDefinition.com Read complete review

David Denton
David's Review Corner, September 2014

A colourful modern look at this highly popular comedy in a new production from Davide Livermoor at the annual Rossini Opera Festival held in Pesaro in 2013. Obviously much enjoyed by the audience, it is very much a matter of personal taste, though in its bright and colourful costumes, the fast and furious action is full of ‘knock about’ comedy. From a vocal point of view, it was a huge success, Yijie Shi a born Rossini tenor who can perform vocal acrobatics and get through those moments when words must trip off the tongue at express speed. Alex Esposito, acts the fool admirably as Mustafa, though his characterisation must be far from the person the composer would have imagined, while in the role as his wife, Mariangela Sicilia, commands a powerful soprano voice. Shoehorned into the small orchestral pit in Pesaro’s charming opera house are part of the Bologna opera orchestra who provide a neat accompaniment for conductor, Jose Ramon Encinar. The video recording ideally captures the feverish action on stage, the colours and detail being of the highest quality. © 2014 David’s Review Corner
