Robert Farr
MusicWeb International, December 2015

On Bluray, another opera that Donizetti staged in Paris features French-speaking Ludovoc Tezier, very much the lyric baritone of the moment, alongside a good cast… © 2015 MusicWeb International

Fanfare, November 2015

The work, lately performed most often in its bowdlerized Italian version, deserves better, and has found it here. Sung in its original French, this opera has some very fine music, performed well here. © 2015 Fanfare Read complete review

George Dorris
Ballet Review, September 2015

Staged by Vincent Boussard in a relatively unfussy production, it’s sung by an international cast: the rising Chinese tenor Yijie Shi as Fernand, the American mezzo Kate Aldrich as a good Leonore, and the French baritone Ludovic Tézier as a rather monochromatic Alfonse. Antonello Allemandi conducts the strong chorus and orchestra. © 2015 Ballet Review

Fanfare, September 2015

This Opus Arte disc has razor-sharp visual clarity in rich color, is in the original language, and is finely sung, arguably better than any of the current audio sets available. A top pick and highly recommended. © 2015 Fanfare Read complete review

DONIZETTI, G.: Favorite (La) (Théâtre du Capitole, 2014) (NTSC) OA1166D
DONIZETTI, G.: Favorite (La) (Théâtre du Capitole, 2014) (Blu-ray, HD) OABD7165D

…a superfine performance. The ear is immediately engaged with the authentically French-Italian tenor of Yijie Shi. He’s the real thing! No high tessitura or high notes faze him. He quietly walks through the music leaving all the drama and beauty to his voice. © 2015 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

Robert J. Farr
MusicWeb International, June 2015

…the singing of the three principals is more than adequate. Native French speaker Ludovic Tézier is now the baritone of choice in lyric roles in particular in the French and Italian repertoire. Sonorous, expressive and with clear articulated diction, his singing stands out… Yijie Shi is a pleasant revelation with a clear high-lying tenor well up to the demands that Donizetti wrote for his original tenor, Duprez. He phrases Donizetti’s graceful lines with feeling and a fair legato. © 2015 MusicWeb International Read complete review

RadsReferenceReviews, June 2015

The production is very beautiful. The music comes first and it’s lovely to hear. American mezzo Kate Aldrich has a fine spinto voice and manages all the tortuous twists and turns of her part with ease. The HD picture is color rich and has excellent contrast, and the recorded sound is quite good… © 2015 RadsReferenceReviews Read complete review

DONIZETTI, G.: Favorite (La) (Théâtre du Capitole, 2014) (NTSC) OA1166D
DONIZETTI, G.: Favorite (La) (Théâtre du Capitole, 2014) (Blu-ray, HD) OABD7165D

The ground production, and singing, are strong […] Yijie Shi in particular sounds special, a real Jugend-lyrischer with good French.

Allemandi never ignores the music’s grandeur but is able to keep things moving. An important opera well worth getting to know. © 2015 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone

Fulvue Drive-in, May 2015

…spectacular release here featuring the full-blown opera at 184 minutes with a great cast…The result just justifies its length and is worth discovering this underseen work. © 2015 Fulvue Drive-in Read complete review

The Flip Side, April 2015

…a thoroughly impressive 2014 revival in Toulouse, France, starring American mezzo Kate Aldrich in a career-defining performance as the heroine Leonor. © 2015 The Flip Side Read complete review
