Janos Gardonyi
The WholeNote, June 2014

Shining River…features Susan Chilcott, the great English lyric soprano whose young life tragically ended in 2003 and who created many memorable heroines (eg Verdi, Janáček, Britten) on the opera stage. The Shining River is of course the Ohio, starting off a program of American traditional and poetic songs by Aaron Copland and others, where her supreme artistry, youthful vitality and imagination is really a “shining river” surging through this very heartwarming disc. A great gift for young and old alike…Iain Burnside is the accompanist. © 2014 The WholeNote Read complete review

David Patrick Stearns
Gramophone, November 2013

…[Chilcott’s] performances of Copland at his folksiest feel perfectly idiomatic, and without the starchiness one still hears from some American singers. As much as she enjoys the text, she uses her full operatic voice without any gimmicky tone manipulation to suggest the different personalities behind the songs. Much spirit and feeling is evident here, especially in ‘The Little Horses’…

With a solid character to play, the performances show special attention to enunciating and colouring the words as well as a freer sense of vocalism. Also, the voice is caught in a more flattering theatre acoustic. Live performance was clearly her medium. © 2013 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone
