Huntley Dent
Fanfare, January 2019

Michaela Kaune’s Eva is very good: the voice full, the portrayal passionately delivered. Kaune’s singing is very convincing. The quality of the ensemble cast is well represented in a thoughtful, moving quintet…

Sebastian Weigle ties everything together skillfully, getting lovely playing from the Bayreuth orchestra… © 2019 Fanfare Read complete review

Opera News, December 2018

The timing marks maestro Sebastian Weigle as a moderate, swifter than some. The Bayreuth Festival Orchestra and Chorus are exemplary. That Meistersinger is supremely great music comes through loud and clear.

Michaela Kaune’s bright, glowing Eva, beautifully launching the quintet, is surprisingly close to the Schumann/Schwarzkopf/Grümmer standard. Carola Guber is an assertive, lusty Magdalene. Markus Eiche nails Kothner’s downward-spiraling coloratura. 2018 Opera News Read complete review

It is indeed a treat to savour the excellent sound of the Bayreuth strings, as well as the just as excellent woodwind and brass. Sebastian Weigle, who made his Bayreuth debut with Meistersinger and conducted it throughout the five-year period it was running, is a splendid Wagnerian which was obvious to me back in 2008 in Bayreuth… Here in Die Meistersinger he chooses sensible tempos that keeps the long work constantly on the move. He never drags, he never rushes things, I would say his reading is in the middle of the road… © 2018 MusicWeb International Read complete review
