Fortunately for DVD collectors, Opus Arte has begun to issue a valuable series of live operatic performances of Mozart's and other composers' works under the banner of its La Scala Collection, with the performances emanating from Milan's great opera house. This Don Giovanni was taped there, originally for broadcast by the RAI network, in 1987. The production is a major one, directed by Giorgio Strehler, with sets by Enzo Frigerio and costumes by Franca Squarciapino, and it comes as a visual relief to those of us heartily sick of the willful eccentricities currently being visited on Mozart's operas in places such as Salzburg and the leading cities of Germany. The presence of Riccardo Muti as conductor is a further guarantee of the production's integrity.
