Last year the record industry marked the centenary of the death of Max Reger. Numerous recordings were released, but the quality varied widely, main because of the tortuous demands the composer makes on his performers. None of those have fazed Guido Schiefen or Jacob Leuschner, however, whose survey of the composer’s cello and piano works brings out the textural and harmonic sophistication of the music while retaining an ideal lightness of touch. © 2017 Fanfare Read complete review

Schiefen is a cellist with considerable variety of touch, and both he and pianist Leuschner seem determined to emphasize the variety of emotion implied in Reger’s style. These four sonatas contain some of his most memorable ideas, and these players bring out some of the best that’s in them.
