Jeffrey J. Lipscomb
Fanfare, November 2009

Bolton’s Salzburg ensemble sounds like a chamber orchestra of reduced size, and I would guess the strings here number less than 40 players. Perhaps due to Bolton’s extensive background in Baroque music, the strings play with very little if any vibrato. The result is a very transparent but quite small-scale sort of Bruckner that might almost be mistaken for a Sturm und Drang work by Haydn. Bolton shapes the music with great sensitivity and navigates transitions seamlessly. Much of the woodwind playing here is exquisite, and the solo trumpet and first horn play their parts flawlessly. © 2009 Fanfare Read complete review
