Rick Jones
Words and Music, March 2014

Schuch gives vivid life to Ullmann’s Piano Concerto…Fear is audible in the murky modal theme of the allegro, the piano adding an edge like a fixed bayonet. The contrasting second theme is surreal—a dreamy romance with a spiky piano—as extreme as war and peace. The pacific mood prevails in the tranquillo second movement with the gentle piano in faint dialogue with the harp over muted strings. Schuch justifies Ullmann’s witness-like score, defying the evil which suppressed a man but not his spirit. That lives on here. Schuch honours the Czech by marrying his concerto with Beethoven’s Third, the ominous C minor opening and jaunty second subject a prototype for Ullmann’s concept. Elts conducts the German radio orchestra with breadth, weight, judicious speeds and deference to the soloist. © 2014 Words and Music Read complete review

MusicWeb International, May 2013

Though soloist Herbert Schuch has already appeared on a few Oehms discs of solo and chamber music, this is his debut recording with orchestra, and a thoroughly impressive one it is, elegant and expressive in the Beethoven, vivacious and virtuosic in the Ullmann. The WDR Symphony Orchestra are an orchestra of considerable pedigree and experience, and in…Olari Elts’ capable hands they give good accounts of these two quite different works.

Sound quality is good. The German-English booklet notes are detailed and well written… © 2013 MusicWeb International Read complete review
