Adrian Horsewood
Early Music Today, June 2020

Adrian Willaert (c.1490-1562) was one of the most influential composers of his time, and occupied the post of maestro di cappella at St Mark’s, Venice for 35 years. While Willaert’s fame was widespread from early in his life, Europe was astounded by the publication of his Musica Nova in 1559, a vast anthology containing 25 madrigals and 27 lengthy motets never previously printed. This album complements Singer Pur’s earlier recording of the Petrarch madrigals of Musica Nova, and the two together make for delightful listening. The motets are characterised by clear, unfussy word-setting and simple harmonic movement, and in Singer Pur they have the ideal performers. © 2020 Early Music Today

Fanfare, November 2013

Willaert had a 450th anniversary last year, commemorated by two sets of his largely unrecorded Musica Nova from Singer Pur. There wasn’t room to mention the madrigals three years ago, but the motets deserve a place in the Want List this year. © 2013 Fanfare

This is the largest collection of Willaert’s motets from the 1559 publication currently available and, to the best of my knowledge, there has never been any earlier complete collection…

If you know and like the music of Josquin, to whom some of Willaert’s music was once attributed, you should enjoy this collection…

The Regensburg-based ensemble Singer Pur live up to their name with warmth and purity of tone…I certainly wouldn’t want to be without this recording. © 2013 MusicWeb International Read complete review

It is easy to see in each of these motets why Willaert was held up as a model by composers such as Claudio Monteverdi for his ability to fashion effective and affective settings for these texts. And it is also easy to say that these recordings are models of expert performance for these intricate works. © 2013 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

Overall these performances are very good. This project is of major importance and a worthy tribute to one of the greatest composers of the 16th century. The liner-notes are informative and include everything one would wish to have. © 2013 MusicWeb International Read complete review
