Myron Silberstein
Fanfare, November 2014

…Herbert Schuch succeeded both in being original and stylistically appropriate. No other performance I have heard acknowledges the Viennese waltz qualities of the second theme to the third movement of the Sonata in A. Schuch’s playing of the remainder of the sonata, as well as of the “Wanderer” Fantasy, is dynamic, colorful, and gripping. Janáček’s Sonata “1. X. 1905” makes a welcome companion, and Schuch gives it a dramatic, tragic performance. © 2014 Fanfare

Fanfare, July 2014

Herbert Schuch presents a dashing, extroverted reading of the [Wanderer Fantasy], full of bold contrasts in articulation and dynamics…Schuch’s approach…[is a model] of emotional depth and technical mastery. The sound engineering is in keeping with the aesthetic of…[the] performance…

Janáček’s Sonata 1. X. 1905 is much less well-known than any of Schubert’s major piano works…Schuch treats it to a rhapsodic performance, with excellent control of musical tension and with a consistent attention to melodic line even within the thickest textures. © 2014 Fanfare Read complete review

Alan Becker
American Record Guide, May 2014

Most listeners will immediately recognize the Janáček sound world. The music is powerfully expressive and aching with meaningful thoughts and pauses to which Schuch responds magnificently. I cannot think of another performance I prefer to this one. I also cannot think of another young artist seemingly able to get inside of any music he plays and to recreate it from the inside out. Sound engineering is terrific… Get your wallets open for this one. © 2014 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide
