Charles H. Parsons
American Record Guide, January 2015

The opera’s rousing overture is played with more elegance than usual—brilliant but still rabble-rousing. Weigle gets a sonorous sound and confidence from his orchestra and chorus. © 2015 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

Steven Ritter
Audiophile Audition, July 2014

The singing is outstanding, with Peter Bronder in splendid form as the eponymous hero, while Christiane Libor makes a splendid Irene. The rest of the cast is uniformly excellent… © 2014 Audiophile Audition Read complete review

Blair Sanderson, April 2014

…with the strong German cast and the choir and orchestra of the Frankfurt Opera, conducted by Wagner authority Sebastian Weigle, this is a lively performance that fully conveys the power and excitement that the young Wagner intended. Gramophone, April 2014

Recording quality is excellent. A big recommendation… © 2014 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone, March 2014

…[this] recording features very fine singing in all the solo roles, with especially strong performances by Peter Bronder as Rienzi and Christiane Libor as his sister, Irene. Claudia Mahnke handles the trouser role of Adriano, Irene’s lover, effectively, and the heads of the noble families of Colonna (Falk Struckmann) and Orsini (Daniel Schmutzhard) come through with the right mixture of stentorian proclamations and Machiavellian self-interest. The chorus is particularly fine, reflecting the populace’s role both in Rienzi’s overnight success and in his equally precipitous fall from grace. And Weigle leads the orchestra and vocal forces with a sure hand, pacing the action somewhat slowly so that it builds effectively without dragging.

It is an opera whose acquaintance is well worth making. © 2014 Read complete review
