Michael Quinn
Classical Ear, July 2019

…Johannes Debus’ fresh, fleet and often vibrant account of The Cunning Little Vixen benefits greatly from his deft inking in of light and shade, the brimming vitality of a cast younger than usually assembled for Janáček’s sweet-sour masterpiece, and the palpable adrenalin of a live (and crisply captured) recording. Louise Alder’s infectiously engaging, vocally nimble Vixen, Jenny Carlstedt’s attractively swashbuckling Fox and Simon Neal’s deftly nuanced Forester… © 2019 Classical Ear Read complete review

Opera, June 2019

Let me say at once that Louise Alder’s Vixen is all her many admirers could have wished for, and more… Alder’s bright lyric soprano makes every rabbit tell. © 2019 Opera

Classical Music Daily, June 2019

A long-awaited addition to the Janáček discography in excellent sound quality and informative notes that should arouse one's curiosity for a fresh appraisal of a true Czech operatic masterpiece. © 2019 Classical Music Daily

While Debos is even more incisive at the beginning of Act II, the tables are turned later for the love scene between the Vixen and Fox, where Debos is more tender with softer timpani strokes. Elsewhere, and especially at the opera’s conclusion, Debos’s timpani are even harder-hitting and clearer than Mackerras’s, impressive as those are. There is little difference in the orchestral “prelude” at the beginning of Act III. Both are powerful and superbly played. … Again the live production undoubtedly accounts for this. As to the whole, there is really little to choose between Mackerras and Debos musically and one should be totally satisfied with either. © 2019 MusicWeb International Read complete review

This Frankfurt recording of the opera The Cunning Little Vixen is a must for all who love Janáček and have ears for something special. © 2019 www.klassik.com

Lark Reviews, April 2019

This is a live recording made last year from Frankfurt opera and one which could just as easily have been on DVD given the impressive production photos in the accompanying booklet. The modern dress approach—and particularly the highly anthropomorphic costuming for the foxes—seems to carry over into the liveliness of the approach and the sense both of attack in the orchestra combined with those wonderfully indulgent pastoral moments which Janacek creates. © 2019 Lark Reviews

The Light Music Society, March 2019

An authoritative and hugely satisfying recording that I have no hesitation in heartily recommending. © 2019 The Light Music Society
