Christopher Williams
Fanfare, January 2008

Countless moments on this disc call forth miraculously perfect interpretive gestures from relative newcomer Suovanen. I had not encountered his name until last summer, when I caught a thoroughly ridiculous staging of Eugene Onegin at the Berlin Komische Oper in which he was featured (forgettably set in an airport lounge). Most of his operatic stage credits have been confined to Mozart, with detours to Valentin and Billy Budd. This recording captures what a find he is: a richly textured voice, plenty of heft, and a core of burnished steel, with a vibrant ring to his top range when singing at full bore, and sparing, strategic use of falsetto on other occasions.

These are important songs by an indispensable composer, realized with one of the most striking performances of a male singer caught on disc in the past year. © 2008 Fanfare Read complete review

Einojuhani Rautavaara continues to demonstrate that one can write tonal, communicative music…without writing down to some low common denominator.
