INNER, February 2018

After successful Ligeti and Messiaen CD’s now comes a new album dedicated to orchestral works of an Italian modernist Luciano Berio. The Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra performs Hannu Lintu conducting.

The recording begins with Berio’s orchestral adaptation of Luigi Boccherini’s popular Ritirata Notturna di Madrid. An attractive piece of music, as is Calmo for mezzo-soprano and 22 instruments. The work is sung with true dedication by mezzo-soprano Virpi Räisänen.

A highlight of the disc, and the very good reason to buy it, is Berio’s most well-known work, the iconic 5-movement Sinfonia. Bringing together collage technique and modernism, the symphony is one of the master pieces of the 1960s. © 2018 INNER Read complete review

…the orchestral sound is ravishing—bigger, more colorful, with a far greater dynamic range than earlier recordings usually captured. © 2015 PS Audio Read complete review

Fanfare, May 2015

Hannu Lintu’s new recording [of the Sinfonia] is a strong contender. [He] has an excellent sense of the complex musical tapestries, whether the haunting lines of the second movement memorial to Martin Luther King or the swirling collage of the third movement, which emerges with unusual eloquence. It’s a gorgeously colored performance, too, and Lintu brilliantly shapes the music’s large arcs (the final eruption comes with a strong sense of inevitability). © 2015 Fanfare Read complete review

[In Calmo] Ms. Räisänen conquers the hyper-virtuosic hurdles impressively, but with a rapid vibrato that inhibits the flighty texts. © 2015 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

John Broggio, February 2015

A superlative disc full of shocks for the unsuspecting listener that deserves to be known as widely as possible.

The recording is fortunately fully equal to the demands of this extraordinary music. The Boccherini shows what a wonderful dynamic range is afforded to the players…every contribution feels a natural part of the whole tonal picture.

Very strongly recommended indeed. © 2015 Read complete review

Half a decade on and in danger…of becoming a ‘classic’, here Berio’s Sinfonia feels as vivid, unexpected and contemporary as if new. © 2015 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone

David Hurwitz, December 2014

With this release, it’s probably safe to say that Berio’s iconic Sinfonia has become a repertory staple. What makes this recording special, in its way, is the very “ordinariness” of the interpretation. It’s a cool, clean performance…

An interesting disc…and extremely well-engineered in both regular stereo and SACD audio… © 2014 Read complete review

The performance is tremendously idiomatic and convincing. This production is an all-round winner from beginning to end. © 2014 MusicWeb International Read complete review

Audiophile Audition, December 2014

[This album]…fresh out of the SACD oven, is truly a tremendous effort by all concerned, not surprising from these forces and this label. …this new one sets some pretty high standards.

The hi-res surround sound is splendid here, as are all the performances. Somewhat of an essential disc I would say. © 2014 Audiophile Audition Read complete review

Blair Sanderson, November 2014

This 2014 Ondine multichannel SACD of Hannu Lintu’s performance with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra boasts superior sound that makes other recordings seem flat in comparison, and the eight amplified singers who take on the Swingle Singers’ virtuosic parts are evenly matched in skill and range. © 2014 Read complete review

Cinemusical, October 2014

To say that Ondine’s release is stunning would be an understatement. The sound is simply superb bringing to light whole sections of this music that often get hidden in overambient recordings. Balance is spot on throughout and Lintu finds the right intensity to interpret these pieces.

The Sinfonia will certainly be the primary reason to pick this up, but there is so much else to recommend it! © 2014 Cinemusical Read complete review

Sinfini Music, October 2014

The third work, Sinfonia, is Berio’s most brilliant…[and it] can be unforgettable. This one was given last January in Helsinki by what is the loudest, most pinpoint radio orchestra on earth, conducted by Hannu Lintu and produced by Laura Heikinheimo. If you want to hear every note of Berio’s Sinfonia, you couldn’t find a better reference point. © 2014 Sinfini Music Read complete review
