Sinfini Music, June 2015

Aulis Sallinen is one of the many figures who has made Finland a powerhouse of modern opera; his 1992 stage work based on the Finnish legend of Kullervo is an utterly convincing theatrical masterpiece. © 2015 Sinfini Music

Mark Sealey
Classical Net, September 2014

Both the Finnish National Opera Orchestra and Chorus under Ulf Söderblom achieve a nice blend of forward movement at every necessary point. And attention to detail.

Kullervo (baritone Jorma Hynninen) himself in particular is compelling. Similarly, soprano Eeva-Liisa Saarinen (the mother) projects hope and light in contrast to the others’ tendencies to destruction.

…the sensitivity of Söderblom and his performers’ approach to the work has guaranteed that the recording is taut, effective and rewarding.

Enthusiasts for composer, Finnish music and contemporary opera will not want to miss this release. © 2014 Classical Net Read complete review
