Ondine’s release of reissued material commemorates the 150th anniversary of Sibelius’ birth. Leif Segerstam is a master interpreter of the Finnish composer and the performances here reflect that. However, what makes this disc essential is the special production with a 25-page album of photos, biographical information, and chronology of the composer’s life. © 2015 MusicWeb International

…the standout performance is that of Pohjola’s Daughter, a colourful and symphonic tone poem from Sibelius’s maturity…[this] is a difficult piece to balance, but Segerstam does it as well as I have ever heard, giving all the instruments their due and gauging the movement of the work with perfection.

[The 1996 recording of the Violin Concerto] is a very fine performance in its straightforward way, but it took me by surprise because of Segerstam’s usual penchant for the bold and dramatic. © 2015 MusicWeb International Read complete review

The Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra is naturally very much at home in this music…Beauty of tone is a hallmark of all of these recordings, they are as atmospheric as any in the catalog. Even Finlandia takes on an unusual nobility and freshness. Music lovers will all find something to cherish in this beautiful and generous project. © 2014 Classical Net Read complete review
