Philip Greenfield
American Record Guide, September 2020

This comes on the heels of the Tchaikovsky Liturgy of St John released by this same choir (Jan/Feb 2020). The music this time around is lighter on its feet than the Liturgy. The Alleluias dance a bit, the verticality of the harmonies is less imposing, and the changes in dynamics tend to be less extreme. Other than that, all is as it was earlier this year. Tchaikovsky is shown to have been a master of the idiom, the Latvian Radio Choir cements its status as one of the best ensembles on the planet for this repertoire, and the acoustics of St John’s Church in Riga have the liturgy singing out handsomely in service to God. Maybe I can tag team these as a single entry on my Year’s Best list come January. © 2020 American Record Guide

Ivan Moody
Gramophone, July 2020

Rounding off this recording is a miscellany of other choral pieces, of which the lovely A Legend (1883) is very likely to be familiar to Anglophone audiences, having found fame in an English-language adaptation as ‘The Crown of Roses’, though the dramatic setting of the paschal Zadostoynik Angel vopiyashe (1887) is chosen to end the disc in appropriately celebratory fashion. …The quality of both singing and recording is superb. © 2020 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone

Lark Reviews, May 2020

The bulk of this CD returns us to much more familiar ground with this setting of the Vigil, first performed in a concert setting. Four other short works that follow are far less familiar and make for an interesting conclusion. They include A Jurists’ Song, written for the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Imperial School of Jurisprudence in St Petersburg, where the composer had studied. © 2020 Lark Reviews
