Ronald E. Grames
Fanfare, May 2016

Particularly moving is the emphasis on the darker elements of this mercurial composer’s Violin Sonata (1942–43), given its wartime provenance and the memorial dedication to Federico García Lorca. Violinist Kolja Lessing and pianist Eva-Maria May capture just the right elegiac tone in thecentral “Intermezzo,” and elsewhere play with fire and, at times, surprising Romantic freedom and warmth, though Lessing wisely limits the use of vibrato when the melodies are not soaring. © 2016 Fanfare Read complete review

American Record Guide, March 2016

Wiese and Wienand capture the sophistication of the flute sonata as well as anyone, …It is charming, beautiful, witty, and the epitome of the best of French flute music in the 20th Century.

The performance by the teacher-student duo (Wienand studied with May) is remarkable for its dynamic range and variety of touch along with perfect ensemble. © 2016 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

MusicWeb International, August 2015

Collectively and individually it would be hard to imagine finer exponents of this marvellous music. Wiese, Lessing, Wienand and May provide sensitively characterised performances. Recorded at three locations under studio conditions the engineering team maintains a consistently high level of sound quality: vividly clear and well balanced. Lovers of French music will relish this beautifully produced release. © 2015 MusicWeb International Read complete review
