Jim Svejda
Fanfare, September 2016

…this is one of the most French-sounding Firebirds in years: Textures are diaphanous, rhythms are flexible without ever becoming loose-limbed, inner voicing is extraordinarily subtle, and even the most explosive moments—the “Danse infernal” and the “Mort de Kastchei”—have an underlying delicacy that would not be out of place in Daphnis or, for that matter, in La mer. © 2016 Fanfare Read complete review

STRAVINSKY, I.: Sacre du printemps (Le) (version for orchestra / version for piano 4 hands) (Basel Symphony, D.R. Davies, Maki Namekawa) SOB06
STRAVINSKY, I: Firebird (original orchestral version and arr. for 2 pianos) (Basel Symphony, D.R. Davies, Maki Namekawa) SOB10
STRAVINSKY, I.: Petrushka (version for orchestra / version for piano 4 hands) (Basel Symphony, D.R. Davies, Maki Namekawa) SOB11

Playing Stravinsky’s three Russian ballets in the versions for piano four hands, Davies and Maki Namekawa demonstrate real empathy with the composer’s colourfully rhythmic sound world. Throughout, the duo bring out ample freshness with playing that is crisp and well focused with only occasional strains on overall unity. © 2016 MusicWeb International Read complete review

Raymond Tuttle
Fanfare, July 2016

…Davies’s tempos are broader than usual, yet the music never seems slack. He’s in sympathy with the score’s riotous colors, but not at the expense of textural clarity, and this is a performance that would work well to accompany actual dancing. He does not try to “wow” the listener; he lets Stravinsky’s music speak for itself. …Davies and Namekawa play the piano four hands version handsomely, giving it the same virtues and values as the orchestral version.…Davies and Namekawa are well matched not just connubially but also musically. © 2016 Fanfare Read complete review

This disc is not only one of the best performances I have heard in a long time, but one of the best sounding as well. © 2016 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

Caring for details, colours and transparency, Dennis Russell Davies convinces with one atmospherically and dramatically exciting version of Stravinsky’s Firebird. © 2016 Pizzicato
