Friedrich Gulda is a pianist who continues to polarize even today. Coming from improvisation, he has always taken liberties that have divided the audience. His interpretations on this CD are also very individual and actually far ahead of their time.
We hear interpretations that were definitely modern for the period, 1962, without, however, renouncing the lyrical and poetic character of the 4th Piano Concerto. This, as well as Strauss’ Burlesque, are valuable documents, which do not seem to have aged, and even today, more than half a century later, they can compete with the numerous interpretations from our time. The good sound quality of the SWR recordings is another plus of this valuable Gulda box. © 2020 Pizzicato Read complete review
