MAHLER, G.: Lied von der Erde (Das) (Ludwig, Kmentt, Vienna Symphony, C. Kleiber) WS007

…this one may very well be the greatest-conducted Das Lied ever.

Stuart Burrows…is really wrapped up in the role here, Mathis is superb, and although McIntyre could be subtler, he is by no means brusque.

…a wonderful album and one that I wouldn’t want to be without… © 2015 Fanfare Read complete review

Kleiber’s conducting isn’t unusual in any drastic way; you hear someone of considerable skill and musicality. That is to say, the whole performance comes off well. The Vienna Symphony wasn’t a top-tier orchestra at the time, yet its playing is more than acceptable… In the end what makes this recording indispensable is the luminous magic of “Der Abschied” from both singer and conductor. Every lover of this unique masterpiece should get a chance to experience it. © 2015 Fanfare Read complete review

Considering Kleiber’s lifelong apathy towards Mahler his connection to the music is surprisingly excellent. …this performance of Das Lied is the conductor’s achievement, and as such it should manage to squeeze its way onto your shelf as one of the two or three greatest performances of all time. © 2015 Fanfare Read complete review

What a treasure we have in this recording on the Vienna Symphony label of Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde…A magnificent performance of this work with perfect soloists, an inspired conductor and the orchestra…This is a performance of Das Lied every Mahler enthusiasts should own. © 2014 Read complete review, October 2014

Kleiber was blessed with two outstanding soloists in Christa Ludwig and Waldemar Kmentt: their expressiveness, especially Ludwig’s, helps overcome Kleiber’s rather cool and distanced approach to the music. Kmentt delivers his drinking songs with a strong voice and considerable fervor, but it is the delicacy of Ludwig’s singing and her heartfelt handling of Der Abschied that are the high points of the performance. This is a fine recording in many ways… © 2014 Read complete review

Sinfini Music, October 2014

Steady, almost over-cautious in the opening, Kleiber frees the tenor Waldemar Kmentt to surmount the orchestra without strain, every syllable articulated. With the alto, Christa Ludwig, he is no less considerate, melding her voice with the colours of the orchestra as Mahler required. Ludwig has seldom sounded lovelier. As the finale drains away to a point of disintegration, her voice achieves an other-worldliness, detached from bodily gravity.

The conductor’s tempo changes are so radical that they can, in isolation, sound eccentric…Kleiber’s Lied belongs among the skyscrapers. © 2014 Sinfini Music Read complete review
