Fanfare, November 2017

Manfred Honeck had a terrific year in front of the microphones, for in addition to the stunning Pittsburgh Symphony recording of Beethoven’s Fifth and Seventh Symphonies, …his Vienna Symphony anthology Springtime in Vienna is an unalloyed delight. …the Vienna Symphony in this music under this conductor is every bit the equal of the city’s senior band. © 2017 Fanfare Read complete review

A follow-up to their splendid album of Strauss waltzes, overtures, and polkas, this new collection from Manfred Honeck and the Vienna Symphony called Frühling in Wien (Springtime in Vienna) is every bit as enchanting, proof that the years the conductor spent playing in the Vienna Philharmonic were certainly not wasted. There’s an easy, idiomatic grace in all the performances which, while generally free of the exaggerated, tourist-trap delayed off-beats one still tends to hear at the Vienna Philharmonic New Year’s Day Concert, nonetheless move with an infectious rhythmic lilt. © 2017 Fanfare Read complete review

The program and playing are very enjoyable and conductor Honeck offers the lilt, lightness, and sensitivity required by the music. There needs to be some sweetness (but not too much) and a connection with the rhythms of the music, which Honeck and the Vienna Symphony have in their DNA. I enjoyed this for the variety of selections and the excellent playing and sound. © 2017 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

This is an imaginative disc which manages to stay firmly in Viennese waltz territory whilst piquing the interest. © 2017 Planet Hugill Read complete review

…with Honeck, there are those tiny, giveaway expressive inflections that suggest vintage branding, the sort of playing that has you smiling in appreciation. © 2017 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone

New Year’s Concert 2017 (Neujahrskonzert 2017) (Vienna Philharmonic, Dudamel) 886446077215 / 886446077208
Orchestral Music - BEETHOVEN, L. van / SCHÖNHERR, M. / STRAUSS, E. / STRAUSS, R. / SUPPE, F. von (Frühling in Wien) (Vienna Symphony, Honeck) WS011

The VSO have this music in their blood as much as the VPO and they offer a varied programme of the music of Austria, ending inevitably in Vienna.

With idiomatic playing throughout and good recording, the whole programme makes a very worthwhile pendant to any of the New Year’s concerts. © 2017 MusicWeb International Read complete review

The Wiener Symphoniker knows this music extremely well. Manfred Honeck ensures that a conspicuous and unerringly elegant Viennese lilt is successfully given to the waltzes, together with a glorious light and shade in the tone colours. In addition the orchestra supplies a sparkling exuberance to the marches, gallops and polkas.

Full of delightful and vivacious Viennese dance themed music the Wiener Symphoniker under Manfred Honeck is on intoxicating form. This album is a sheer delight. © 2017 MusicWeb International Read complete review
