Fanfare, March 2015

By any standard, this is a superlative Mahler Fifth; given that it’s a live performance by a student orchestra, it’s frankly jaw-dropping.

What strikes you immediately is the absolute fearlessness of the playing: from the opening trumpet solo to the blazing final bars, these are not simply gifted kids letting adrenalin do the bulk of the work, but clear-eyed pre-professionals showing how comfortably they’d fit into any orchestra in the world. And while all the solo voices emerge with abundant character and courage, the ensemble playing is even more impressive. At no point does anything seem either tentative or insecure; in fact, after the first couple of minutes, you can simply take the playing for granted and enjoy the interpretation.

As may be gathered from his Royal Liverpool Philharmonic recordings, Gerard Schwarz is an instinctive and hugely satisfying Mahler conductor, and is certainly one here.

Recorded on magnetic tape…the album presents an extremely accurate sound picture of both Pasadena’s Ambassador Auditorium and this remarkable young orchestra. Buy it, put it on, and feel your jaw drop as well. © 2014 Fanfare

The Mahler 5th recording is amazing! The depth is endless, and right-to-left separation is seamless and realistic. I heard power and majesty. I heard elegance and sweetness. Of course, Gerard Schwarz…is a master artist, and right at home with Mahler. I am astounded. © 2015 Positive Feedback Online Read complete review

From its riveting opening notes, Schwarz and the Colburn pounce all over Mahler’s 5th with mastery and confidence. In fact, had I not known that the Colburn was performing, I would have assumed that I was listening to one of the great symphonies on the planet. Yes, it’s that good…no sense of immaturity or unsureness at all.

…this is a true reference-class performance and recording! © 2015 Positive Feedback Online Read complete review
