The Spectacular Naxos Blu-ray Audio Experience
SCHUMANN Scenes from Goethe’s Faust
Soloists • Warsaw Boys’ Choir
Warsaw Philharmonic Choir & Orchestra • Antoni Wit

Naxos Blu-ray Audio NBD0015

Goethe’s Faust is one of the highest peaks of German Romantic poetry, and fascinated composers across Europe: Berlioz, Liszt and Gounod were just some of the many entranced by its visionary power. Schumann too set what he called “Scenes from Goethe’s Faust”, but he made a point of selecting excerpts rather than using a libretto, focusing more on Part 2 of the play. The result is a work of astonishing passion, which includes some of the most dramatic music Schumann ever wrote, and some of the most beautiful as well, embracing elements of oratorio, opera, song and orchestral poem. Antoni Wit’s recording has been acclaimed for “tempos which flow with unforced naturalness and real excitement.” (ClassicsToday.com)

SZYMANOWSKI Symphonies Nos 3 & 4
Ryszard Minkiewicz, tenor • Jan Krzysztof Broja, piano
Warsaw Philharmonic Choir & Orchestra • Antoni Wit

Naxos Blu-ray Audio NBD0022

Szymanowski’s Symphony No. 3 ‘Song of the Night’ creates a potent atmosphere of Persian mysticism in its rich blend of voices and exotic orchestration. His Symphony No. 4 is largely extrovert in character and has a prominent rôle for piano. Symphonies Nos. 1 and 2 can be found on NBD0021. The CD release of Symphony No. 3 was Gramophone Editor’s Choice and given 5 STARS by ClassicFM (8.570721), and Symphony No. 4 an ‘unbeatable’ 10/10 from ClassicsToday.com (8.570722); the complete cycle acclaimed as ‘revelatory’ (ClassicalCDReview.com).

Once again our founder and Chairman Klaus Heymann shares his thoughts and opinions on new recordings from Naxos. Klaus Heymann created Naxos Records as a way to pursue his passion for music and share it with others around the world. Despite the demands of running a large company, he still guides repertoire choices and oversees many details of the label personally.
Please enjoy these recommended offers on a selection for September Naxos releases from the desk of Klaus Heymann.
8.572525 Arvo PÄRT Piano Music

Dutch pianist Ralph van Raat has already made many successful recordings for Naxos, all receiving excellent reviews. This new recording features piano works by the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. Pärt’s music has been selling exceptionally well on Naxos and this new release will be no exception.
8.572705 SIBELIUS Symphonies Nos 6 & 7, Finlandia

This is the final volume of our new Sibelius cycle with the exciting young Finnish conductor Pietari Inkinen and our New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. The first three volumes created a great deal of interest with reviews ranging from outstanding to critical. These performances all bring new insights to the symphonies and many surprises. They are a must for Sibelius lovers and collectors. It's a Sibelius Symphony cycle we can be proud of. Inkinen and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra will also record two more volumes of tone poems over the next few years so that, eventually, we will have the orchestral music of the Finnish composer complete.

8.570767 Pierre RODE Violin Concertos Nos 3, 4 & 6

Recording the works of the great French violin virtuoso/composers of the first half of the 19th century is one of my pet projects. This is the second volume of our project to record the 13 concertos of Rode. This is seldom recorded repertoire and the first volume was greeted with great critical acclaim. This is a must for all lovers of great fiddling and good tunes.

8.572409 MALIPIERO Impressioni dal vero, Pause del silenzio

These are world premiere recordings some of the composer’s most important works. We already have all the symphonies on Naxos and this is the penultimate installment in our project to record the complete orchestral works of Malipiero. The final disc is already in the can.

The performances come from our Italian house orchestra and conductor, the Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma and Francesco La Vecchia. We expect this recording to generate a great deal of critical interest.

8.572788 RIMSKY-KORSAKOV Capriccio espagnol, Overtures, Dubinushka

This is the second installment of a three-disc survey of the orchestral music of Rimsky-Korsakov with the Seattle Symphony conducted by Gerard Schwarz. The first installment, Scheherazade received great critical acclaim and is considered to be among the finest recordings of the work. This new disc offers the ever-popular Capriccio espagnol coupled with three of the composer’s most popular opera overtures as well as the Russian Easter Overture and the Overture on Russian Themes. Great performances and outstanding sound. The final disc of the survey will offer all the most popular orchestral suites from the composer’s operas.

8.572211 PENDERECKI Viola Concerto, Cello Concerto No 2

These are two of the composer’s most successful Concerto compositions. The violist, Grigori Zhislin, has been closely associated with this work and gives a highly idiomatic performance. Cellist Tatjana Vassiljeva, winner of several important international compositions, is one of the world’s top cellists today. This is the ideal recording for listeners interested in our ongoing project to record the complete works of Penderecki with the Warsaw Philharmonic under Naxos house conductor, Antoni Wit.
