SHOSTAKOVICH Symphonies Nos 6 & 12
Royal Liverpool Philharmonic • Vasily Petrenko
Naxos Orchestral 8.572658

Shostakovich’s Sixth and Twelfth Symphonies both had their origins in large-scale projects about Lenin, though the Sixth was eventually to emerge as one of the composer’s most abstract and idiosyncratic symphonies. The long, intensely lyrical and meditative slow movement that opens the work is one of the composer’s most striking. The Twelfth, one of the least played of Shostakovich’s symphonies in the West, became less a celebration of Lenin’s legacy than a chronological depiction of events during the Bolshevik Revolution. ‘The playing is fabulously crisp and committed, while the interpretations combine atmosphere and a sense of proportion—to the benefit of the youthful First, which receives an eerily effective performance, free of exaggeration.’ (Financial Times on Naxos 8.572396 / Symphonies Nos. 1 and 3)

Once again our founder and Chairman Klaus Heymann shares his thoughts and opinions on new recordings from Naxos. Klaus Heymann created Naxos Records as a way to pursue his passion for music and share it with others around the world. Founder and Chairman Klaus Heymann offers his insights on a selection of October Naxos releases.
2.110614-15 Francesco CAVALLI La virtù de’strali d’Amore

This is one of the earliest operas of the Baroque period performed by a cast of well-known specialists and Europa Galante conducted by Fabio Biondi. Cavalli was influenced by Monteverdi but developed his own style. With superb singing and stylish performances by Europa Galante, this is the only recording of the work currently available. A must for collectors of Baroque music and especially Baroque opera.
8.572245 HANDEL Complete Violin Sonatas

This is one of very few Baroque violin performances of the complete sonatas. They are part of the curriculum of many young violinists, two are even included in the Suzuki Violin School. The soloist, Ariadne Daskalakis previously recorded works by Tartini and Lutosławski for Naxos. Excellent performances of some of the most popular works for violin and keyboard of the Baroque era.

8.572658 SHOSTAKOVICH Symphonies Nos 6 & 12

Another volume in our critically acclaimed project to record the complete Shostakovich symphonies with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and Russian star conductor Vasily Petrenko. These are two of the less performed symphonies and deserve to be heard alongside the rest of the cycle.

8.572666 AZERBAIJANI PIANO CONCERTOS

Naxos house conductor, Dmitry Yablonsky, has struck gold in Azerbaijan and recorded these colourful concertos with two Azerbaijani pianists and the Royal Philharmonic. Exotic sounds, colourful orchestration and musical storytelling – think of Khachaturian’s best works. Idiomatic performances and terrific sound.

8.572598 IRELAND Piano Concerto, Legend, First Rhapsody, A Sea Idyll

Soloist, John Lenehan, previously recorded three volumes of Ireland’s solo piano music to great critical acclaim. This is part of our ongoing project to record as many British piano concertos as possible.

8.660274 François-André Danican PHILIDOR Sancho Pança

French Baroque opera from Opera Lafayette, our Washington-based specialized opera company. The Washington Post praised the production of this comedy revue as a ‘sparkle of shining surfaces’. Enjoyable singing and playing.

8.572523 BUSONI Piano Concerto

This recording forms part of our ongoing project to record works by Italian composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Busoni Concerto is the longest piano concerto in the repertoire and features not only quite a big orchestra but also a male chorus. The soloist here, appropriately, is a winner of the Busoni Piano Competition. And, of course, the performances by the Rome Symphony Orchestra conducted by house conductor Francesco La Vecchia are as good as the others in our series.

8.572403 GRIEG Music for String Orchestra

Bjarte Engeset recorded these works with 60 string players instead of the usual chamber forces. Bjarte’s other recordings of Grieg’s orchestral works have received great critical acclaim, and we are now down to only one more volume left in the project.

Naxos DVD 2.110614-15
La virtù de’ strali d’Amore was the first of ten operas Cavalli wrote with librettist Giovanni Faustini. Set in Cyprus, the plot involves enchanted and pastoral elements, love and its thwarting, the counterpointing of Man and God, sorcery, revelation and ultimate resolution, all accomplished in a brilliant series of scenes. A follower of Monteverdi, Cavalli reveals the influence of the older man but also his own pronounced independence. Fabio Biondi and Europa Galante have become one of the most admired partnerships in the history of baroque music performance.
