The winter season brings families around the world together for song and festivities. In Slovenia, a hallmark of the holidays is the traditional carol-singing called kolednica. These koledne, or carols, include recited texts that refer to rituals of winter, such as New Year’s Day, the Feast of the Three Kings, and the commemoration of the Slaughter of the Innocents by Herod. Interspersed among these carols are instrumental folk tunes and dances that bear similar importance. Produced in collaboration with the Slovenian Institute of Ethnomusicology, this recording is a rare, unfiltered glimpse into the Slovenian musical heritage.
