MENDELSSOHN / SCHUMANN: Trios (Thibaud / Casals / Cortot) (1927-1928)
One of the most remarkable collaborations in chamber music history, Jacques Thibaud, Alfred Cortot and Pablo Casals nevertheless recorded only a handful of works as an ensemble. The trio were active during a period of almost a decade following their London début in 1925, but a rigorous schedule of international solo commitments, particularly Casals, compounded by subsequent major political disagreements, effectively ended the three distinguished partners’ collaboration in chamber music in 1934. This disc presents two of the trio’s most frequently performed works, the Trios in D minor by Mendelssohn and Schumann. Cortot anchors the ensemble with customary fervor, while Thibaud and Casals complement each other beautifully, the effortless elegance of Thibaud’s phrasing a perfect foil for Casals’ velvet tone.
