This magnificent recording, which has stood the test of time far better than most, was the first of the three pre-war HMV recordings of the Mozart/da Ponte operas based on the Glyndebourne Festival performances conducted by the former music director of the Dresden Opera, and brother of the instrumentalists Adolph and Hermann Busch, Fritz Busch. The producer of the production at Glyndebourne was the eminent German stage director Carl Ebert, and the dramatic understanding and coherence of the performance is evident in every bar, even though the recording does not in fact contain any of the opera’s recitatives.
