The three-act comic opera Princess Ida is a satire both on Tennyson’s poem The Princess and on the feminist movement that had allowed the establishment of women’s colleges at Oxford and Cambridge during the 1870s. Princess Ida was first staged at the Savoy Theatre in January 1884 and ran for 246 performances, with a parallel first American production opening in February. This reissue also includes excerpts from the 1931 Columbia Light Opera Company recording of The Gondoliers.
