BRAHMS / TCHAIKOVSKY: Piano Concertos (Horowitz) (1940-1941)
Vladimir Horowitz and Arturo Toscanini formed on of the truly towering partnerships of the concert platform. Together they were responsible for some of the most memorable piano concerto recordings ever made, their close friendship (following Horowitz’s marriage to Toscanini’s daughter, Wanda, in 1933) shining through their shared musical vision in a way that is utterly captivating. The concertos by Brahms and Tchaikovsky were a perfect foil for the sublime talents of both artists, each monumental in scale, permeated with gloriously sweeping melodies and virtuoso passages. Unsurprisingly their recorded performances of these mighty works remain among their greatest accomplishments.
