LHEVINNE, Jozef: Complete Recordings (1920-1937)
The Russian pianist Josef Lhevinne was born near Moscow in 1874. A prodigy, at fifteen he played Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto in a concert conducted by the Russian pianist and composer Anton Rubinstein. The most popular item in this recital is the Blue Danube Waltz arranged by the nineteenth-century pianist Schulz-Evler. Also included is a superb account of the G minor Prelude composed by his classmate Rachmaninov, and Tchaikovsky’s Trepak. Shortly before his death, Tchaikovsky asked Lhevinne to learn three of his late piano pieces. He may be considered to be a truly authoritative interpreter of Tchaikovsky’s music.
