BEETHOVEN / BLISS: Piano Concertos (Solomon) (1943-1944)
The distinguished British pianist Solomon possessed such prodigious musical gifts that his Queen’s Hall début in 1910, at the age of eight, heralded the arrival of a truly outstanding talent. Following his first concert performance of Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto under Henry Wood in 1912 it remained at the core of his repertoire, and such was his mastery of the work that he was chosen to make a recording to mark both the 50th anniversary of the Proms and Woods’ 75th birthday in 1944. The cadenza in the first movement is that by Clara Schumann, which Solomon must have been introduced to by his teacher Mathilde Verne who no doubt learnt it from her own teacher, Clara Schumann herself. Solomon gave the first performance of the Bliss Piano Concerto as part of the 1939 World’s Fair in New York, having worked closely with the composer in the editing of the work. This recording, again with Boult, dates from 1943, shortly after its hugely successful Proms première.
