TCHAIKOVSKY / WIENIAWSKI: Violin Concertos (Elman) (1929, 1950)
One of the true greats of the violin, Mischa Elman was also one of the bestselling musicians of his time. Born in Russia in 1891, he soon embarked on a prodigious solo career, making his London and New York débuts while still a teenager. Though adopting US citizenship in 1923 Elman spent most of his life travelling, achieving a remarkable popularity that saw his recordings sell over 2 million copies. Elman’s overwhelming success relied less on technique than sheer flair, beguiling audiences above all with this magnificently sonorous tone and mastery of the Romantic idiom, both of which are ideally suited to the rich concertos of Tchaikovsky and Wieniawski.
