ELGAR, E. / DELIUS, F.: Violin Concertos (Sammons) (1929, 1944)
Arguably the finest English violinist of his generation, Albert Simmons was already leading adult orchestras by the tender age of 13. In 1908 he was heard by Thomas Beecham, who was so impressed with his playing that he made Sammons leader of the famous Beecham Orchestra, a post he held for five years. A string of prestigious orchestral posts soon followed but it was not long before his solo career took off, and for the next 30 years Sammons performed to great acclaim with nearly every British orchestra. This disc presents Sammons’ two greatest achievements – the first ever complete recording of Elgar’s sumptuous concerto, together with a later recording of Frederick Delius’s concerto, of which he was the dedicatee.
