DVORAK / SCHUMANN: Violin Concertos (Menuhin) (1936, 1938)
Yehudi Menuhin enjoyed a prodigious rise to fame, making his concert début at just seven years old, and among his first teachers were such luminaries as Adolf Busch and George Enescu. Menuhin himself gave the first ever performance of Schumann’s Violin Concerto, in its original form, in December 1937, and the following February he committed it to disc in the recording presented here. The glowing commitment Menuhin brings to this rich work resonates throughout every bar, and the New York Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra’s chief conductor John Barbirolli provides the perfect foil in this expressive tour de force. Menuhin is equally beguiling in Dvořák’s vigorous Violin Concerto, recorded in 1936, making these cherishable performances.
