Made in the Austrian capital, then under Allied occupation, this first ever complete recording of Rosenkavalier has long been viewed as one of the gramophone’s major achievements, and now enjoys classic status. Erich Kleiber’s wonderfully integrated presentation is regarded as a benchmark for other interpretations, while the contributions of Sena Jurinac (Octavian), Hilde Gueden (Sophie) and Ludwig Weber (Baron Ochs) are widely perceived as outstanding. The singers for the smaller roles were all regular members of the Vienna Staatsoper, whose teamwork made a marked contribution to the overall success of the recording.
