BACH, J.S. / ENESCU / PIZZETTI: Violin Sonatas (Menuhin) (1929, 1936, 1938)
This fifth volume in the Naxos series of 78rpm sonata recordings by Yehudi Menuhin focuses on the great violinist’s constant quest for performing new music. It was natural that Menuhin should be drawn to the best-known work for violin by his teacher George Enescu, the Sonata No. 3 ‘in the Romanian folk style’, recorded in Paris in 1932 with the composer in attendance. The 1918–19 Sonata by Ildebrando Pizzetti, one of the major hopes of Italian music, was an even more enterprising choice, especially for a recording. As Menuhin never had the opportunity to record it again, this 1938 performance has great rarity value. The recording of the solo Bach Sonata is an amazing reminder of how well Menuhin could play Bach at 13.
