Janis Ivanovs is considered the most distinguished of Latvian symphonists, with a lyrical and dramatic Second Symphony that has a debt to César Franck and a Third Symphony suggesting a further debt to Scriabin, yet both in an individual style, familiar yet original in its romanticism, with roots in the culture of his own country.
