La Filleule des fees, or The Fairies’ God-Daughter, was first staged at the Paris Opéra in 1849. The leading rôle of the god-daughter, Ysaure, was created by Carlotta Grisi who also created the rôle of Giselle. The story takes place in an idealized countryside and centres around amorous affairs of Ysaure and the intervention of good and wicked fairies. Adam’s music, like that for Giselle, contains many memorable themes, with a continuously vivacious rhythmic impulse and brilliantly colourful orchestration.
